What's the Fishing Like on Roatan?

A complete island-by-island guide to the Bay Islands fishery — species, seasons, and what to expect.

Roatan sits in one of the most productive fishing zones in the Caribbean. The combination of a world-class barrier reef, deep offshore water, and relatively light fishing pressure makes the Bay Islands a genuine destination for anglers chasing multiple species. Here's what you can expect when you step aboard a Pescado Roatán charter.

The Flats: Bonefish and Permit

Inside the barrier reef, Roatan's leeward (south and west) side shelters miles of shallow grass flats — classic bonefish and permit habitat. The fish here are wild, resident, and largely unpressured. Bonefish on Roatan range from 2–6 lbs, with occasional fish to 8 lbs. Permit are larger (5–20 lbs common, with fish above 30 lbs possible), far spookier, and exponentially harder to catch on a fly.

Island-by-Island Guide

Roatan

The largest and most accessible Bay Island. Inner flats along the south and northwest shore hold bonefish and permit year-round. The reef edge produces Wahoo, Dorado, and Tuna. The 2,000-foot drop is within a short run. Best all-around island for combining flats and offshore in a single trip.

Guanaja

Remote, roughly 50 miles east of Roatan. The average bone here runs 5 pounds, significantly larger than most Caribbean destinations. Schools can number in the several hundreds. Targeting large bones with a fly in these conditions is as close to fishing paradise as most anglers will get.

Cayos Cochinos

A protected Honduran Biological Reserve. The waters hold excellent Wahoo and Tuna while the reefs offer some of the best diving in Central America. Our fish-and-dive combo trips target Cayos Cochinos — pristine water with outstanding marine biodiversity.

Utila

Smallest of the three main Bay Islands, lying west of Roatan. Deep water is very close to shore, producing good offshore fishing. Whale sharks frequent Utila's waters April through June and October through November — a unique complement to a fishing trip.

Conservation and the Reef

Honduras has invested significantly in protecting the Bay Islands marine environment. The Roatan Marine Park works to enforce no-take zones, reef anchoring restrictions, and responsible tourism standards. Our catch-and-release ethic on the flats directly supports the long-term health of the bonefish and permit population. When you fish with Pescado Roatán, you're contributing to sustainable ecotourism that benefits the local community and the reef alike.
